Bedside clinicians at a growing private equity-backed healthcare provider were spending large amounts of time looking for patient information in the EMR. As a result, they were unable to gather data on patients quickly enough to make clinical decisions that would improve their care.
Clinicians were also unable to communicate digitally with fellow disciplines (i.e. doctor to nurse) to get quick updates or ask questions. The lack of communication between disciplines resulted in delays, rework, errors, and compliance risks. There were gaps across the patient journey, from pre-admission through post discharge, resulting in increased length of stay, lower conversion to inpatient than desired, and disappointing patient outcomes and satisfaction.
The healthcare provider knew they could improve patient outcomes with better clinician tools, namely a digital solution for team communication and standard, evidence-based actions. But, without the necessary in-house resources to drive alignment, research, design, build and implement an end-to-end healthcare solution with a clear ROI, they needed a partner.

The multi-year engagement, which spanned multiple, diverse projects, began with a deep discovery process to uncover both patient and clinician needs. The researcher interviewed more than 200 clinicians and patients to gather requirements and ideate. By focusing on empirical research, the right data was quickly gathered and analyzed at the onset of the project, ensuring a fast go-to-market for the app.
But the research had another key benefit. Manifold trained the client team on in-field UX research to bring the voice of the customer and personas into all digital initiatives going forward, saving time and ensuring that future tech solutions always map to customer needs.
