Rebuilding a Care Navigation Platform with FHIR and GCP
Rebuilding a Care Navigation Platform with FHIR and GCP
SVP, Chief Clinical Officer
We partnered with a healthcare organization to rebuild the architecture and design of their care navigation web application on Google Cloud Platform (GCP), leveraging FHIR as a transactional data store to ensure interoperability. The primary goal was to create a system that balanced transactional performance and FHIR compliance while overcoming challenges with latency, scalability, and complexity.
Initially, the application used GCP Healthcare API (FHIR) for reads and writes, with analytics data replicated to BigQuery, but this led to latency issues, performance bottlenecks, and overly complex FHIR extensions. To address these challenges, our team implemented several optimizations, including BigQuery Views, a Mongo integration, and asynchronous FHIR integration. This project showcases our ability to combine GCP’s Healthcare API, BigQuery, and Mongo Atlas to create a balanced architecture that delivers both transactional efficiency and standards compliance in healthcare applications.
SVP, Chief Clinical Officer
Enhanced Performance
Optimized the platform by transitioning to Mongo Atlas for real-time transactional operations, eliminating latency and improving user responsiveness.
Streamlined Development
Simplified FHIR extensions by offloading application-specific data to Mongo, reducing development overhead and maintenance complexity.
Interoperability Compliance
Ensured healthcare standards compliance with asynchronous maintenance of FHIR resources for seamless integration and data sharing.
Scalability and Flexibility
Designed an adaptable architecture capable of supporting future growth and evolving application requirements.
